What Is a GSTIN Verification API? A Plain-English Guide

What a GSTIN verification API actually does, how it differs from the GST portal search, and when you need one.

Written and reviewed by the GSTIN API team Last reviewed

A GSTIN verification API is a REST API that lets software check whether a GST Identification Number (GSTIN) is real, registered, and currently active — and pull back the taxpayer details attached to it — without a person manually searching the GST portal. It turns a task a human does by hand into something your own application can do automatically, in real time.

This page defines the term properly: what a GSTIN is, what "verification" specifically means beyond just checking a format, who actually integrates this kind of API, and what a complete response looks like once you do.

What a GSTIN actually is

A GSTIN (GST Identification Number) is the 15-character registration number the government assigns to every business registered under India's Goods and Services Tax regime. It encodes the state code, the business's PAN, an entity/registration counter, a fixed character, and a check digit computed via a Luhn mod-36 style checksum. On its own, a GSTIN is just a string — it does not prove anything until it is checked against live government records. See GSTIN format explained for the full character-by-character breakdown, or how many digits are in a GST number for the short version.

What "verification" means in this context

Verifying a GSTIN means confirming three things: that the number is correctly formatted, that it is actually registered, and that its current status is Active rather than Cancelled or Suspended. A useful verification API goes further and also returns the taxpayer's legal name, registered address, business constitution, and often their GSTR filing history and e-invoicing status — so you can tell not just "is this real" but "is this business actually compliant."

Compliance matters beyond the yes/no question because input tax credit (ITC) flows strictly through GSTR-2B, which is populated from a supplier's own GSTR-1 filings and gated through the Invoice Management System (IMS). A supplier who is registered but not filing can still block your ITC — which is why a thorough API returns filing timeliness, not just a status flag. See input tax credit rules explained for the mechanics.

How it differs from the GST portal's own search

The government's GST portal has a public "Search Taxpayer" page where anyone can look up a GSTIN manually. A verification API wraps the same underlying data in a form software can call directly — no browser, no captcha, no copy-pasting results into a spreadsheet. The trade-off is that an API is built for machines: you get structured JSON back instead of a web page, and you can call it from inside a signup form, a checkout flow, or a nightly batch job.

 curl -s https://gstinapi.com/api/get-taxpayer-info/27AAACR5055K1Z7 \
  -H "X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY"

There is no OAuth dance, no taxpayer consent step, and no OTP here, because the endpoint reads a public registration record rather than acting on a taxpayer's behalf. That is also the sharpest distinction between a verification API and a GSP integration: a GST Suvidha Provider is licensed by GSTN to file returns, generate e-way bills, and push invoices to an Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) using the taxpayer's own credentials. Verification needs none of that machinery.

Who actually uses a GSTIN verification API

  • B2B platforms verifying a business's GSTIN during vendor or seller onboarding.
  • Accounting and invoicing software validating a customer's GSTIN before an invoice is generated.
  • Lending and KYC platforms using GSTIN status as one signal in a broader business verification check.
  • Finance teams running periodic compliance checks across an existing vendor master — see bulk GSTIN verification.

What a typical response contains

A well-built GSTIN verification API returns, at minimum:

Field groupThin APIComplete API (gstinapi.com)
IdentityLegal name onlyLegal name, trade name, GSTIN
StatusActive/Cancelled flagStatus plus registration and cancellation dates
AddressOften omittedPrincipal and additional places of business
ComplianceNot includedFull GSTR filing history, due-date and delay analysis, QRMP preference
e-InvoicingNot includedEnabled yes/no, turnover slab
Minimum vs. complete GSTIN verification API responses.

More complete APIs — including this one — also return recent GSTR filing history and e-invoicing status, which matters if you care about whether a business is compliant, not just whether it exists. A verified response for Reliance Industries Limited (27AAACR5055K1Z7, Maharashtra, Active) carries 354 filing records and 244 additional places of business, which gives a sense of how deep a real payload runs. See the full feature list or the API documentation for the exact response schema.

Verification is not the same as format validation

This distinction trips people up constantly. Format validation checks the string: is it 15 characters, does it follow the state-code + PAN + entity-code + Z + checksum layout, does the checksum match. That check runs entirely offline and costs nothing. The checksum algorithm is public and deterministic, which means anyone can construct a string that passes it while never having been issued to a real business.

When you actually need one

If you verify a handful of GSTINs a year, the GST portal's manual search is fine. If GSTIN verification is a step in a repeatable process — onboarding, invoicing, periodic compliance review — an API removes a manual bottleneck and a source of copy-paste errors. See our comparison of API verification vs manual verification for a fuller breakdown of when each approach makes sense, and the step-by-step guide to verifying a GST number using the API once you decide you need one. Frequently asked questions

It is a REST API that takes a 15-character GSTIN and returns whether it is real, currently registered, and Active, along with the taxpayer's name, address, and filing history — the same information the government's own Search Taxpayer page shows a person, but returned as structured JSON your software can use directly.
No. A GST Suvidha Provider (GSP) is licensed to file returns, generate e-way bills, and push invoices to the Invoice Registration Portal using the taxpayer's own credentials. A verification API only reads public registration data and needs no taxpayer credentials, consent, or OTP — it is a much narrower and simpler integration.
No. A well-formed GSTIN with a correct checksum only proves the string follows the right structure — it does not prove the number was ever issued or that the registration is still active. Only a live lookup against the registry answers that.

Checking a GSTIN on the government portal is free but manual. gstinapi.com gives 20 verification credits free on signup, and the public search tool at /tools/gst-number-search allows five lookups a day with no account at all.
