15 characters — for example 27AAACR5055K1Z7. We check the format and the check digit before spending one of your free lookups. Looks like a well-formed GSTIN. Press search to check it against the government register. A GSTIN is exactly 15 characters.

What a GST number search shows you

Far more than a yes-or-no answer. Every lookup returns the full registration record plus the filing history that tells you whether the business behind the GSTIN is actually operating.

Who the GSTIN belongs to

Legal name and trade name exactly as they appear in the government register — so you can check them against the name printed on the invoice.

Whether it is still active

Current status, plus the cancellation date if the registration has been cancelled. A number that was valid last year may not be valid today.

GST return filing history

Recent GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filings with the period, ARN and filing date, and how many days after the due date each one was filed.

Every place of business

The principal place of business in full, plus the additional places registered against the same GSTIN.

e-Invoicing enablement

Whether the taxpayer is enabled for e-invoicing and which turnover band they fall into — a useful read on the size of the counterparty.

Jurisdiction and structure

Centre and state jurisdiction, business constitution, taxpayer type, and a character-by-character breakdown of the number itself.

How to check a GST number

  1. 1

    Paste the GSTIN

Copy the 15-character number from the invoice, purchase order or registration certificate. Spaces and dashes are stripped automatically, and lowercase is fine.

  2. 2

We validate it before spending a lookup

The number is checked against the GSTIN pattern and its check digit is recomputed. If either fails, you get an explanation of what is wrong — and it does not count against your daily allowance.

  3. 3

    We query the government record

A valid GSTIN is looked up against the GST system, and the registration and filing data comes back in a second or two.

  4. 4

    You read the result

Status, legal name, addresses, jurisdiction, e-invoicing and filing history, plus our own read on how reliably this taxpayer files.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. You get 5 free GSTIN lookups every day with no account, no card and no signup. The allowance resets at midnight India time. If you need more than that, or you want the same data as JSON in your own application, the API gives you 20 free verification credits when you create an account.
The legal name and trade name of the registered business, its current registration status, the date it registered, its constitution and taxpayer type, its centre and state jurisdiction, its nature of business activities, its principal and additional places of business, whether it is enabled for e-invoicing, and its recent GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filing history including how promptly each return was filed.
Lookups read from the government GST system. Responses are held in a short-lived cache measured in hours, so a status that changed this morning is reflected today rather than next week. Each result shows when the underlying record was last fetched.
Yes, and this is the main reason to use a live lookup. Anyone can construct a GSTIN whose checksum is mathematically valid, so a number that "looks right" proves nothing. Only a lookup against the government register shows whether the registration actually exists and whether it is still active.
No. GST registration details are published by the government precisely so that counterparties can check who they are dealing with. There is no consent step and no OTP, unlike bank account or Aadhaar verification.
The free tool is there for people checking a supplier or two before they pay an invoice. Every lookup costs us a request against the government data source, so the daily cap keeps the tool free for that use while steering bulk and automated verification to the paid API, which is built for it.
