What 1,000 GSTIN Verifications Really Cost

Worked costs for 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000 GSTIN verifications, including the engineering time nobody prices in.

Budget requests need a number, not a pricing model. This post gives you three: what it costs to verify 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000 GSTINs on our published rates, what the same work costs done by hand, and the one-off engineering line that belongs in year one and nowhere after that. The headline numbers

Rates: ₹0.50 per verification pay-as-you-go, ₹0.40 per verification once a single credit purchase crosses 2,500 credits. One call returns the registration record and GSTR filing history together, so these are costs per answered question, not per HTTP request.

The bulk rate is reached by the size of one purchase, not by cumulative spend over a year — so 10,000 credits bought in four separate blocks of 2,500 each still qualify, while two blocks of 1,500 do not. Detail in lowest-cost bulk GSTIN verification.

What the same work costs by hand

The alternative to paying for an API is paying somebody to open the GST portal. A single Search Taxpayer check — type the GSTIN, solve the captcha, read the record, copy the fields somewhere useful — runs roughly a minute and a half once a person is practised at it, and longer if you also need the filing history tab.

At 90 seconds per check: 1,000 GSTINs is about 25 hours, 10,000 is about 250 hours — six working weeks of one person doing nothing else. And the output is worse: no structured record, no diff against last quarter, no audit trail, and a transcription error rate that nobody measures. The one-off engineering line

Year one carries integration work that year two does not. Budget it explicitly rather than pretending the API bill is the whole cost:

  • Key management and a request wrapper — hours, not days, for a key-header REST call.
  • Mapping the response into your own model, in one place, so a schema change is one edit.
  • Queue and retry handling for batch runs, including backoff on 429 — see rate limits and webhooks.
  • Storing raw responses for audit, which is what makes a rerun a resume instead of a re-spend.
  • Alerting on status changes if you are monitoring rather than one-shot verifying.

For a straightforward integration this is typically a few days of one engineer. Anything materially larger usually means the API you picked has undocumented limits or unstable responses — which is itself the argument for choosing on the criteria in how to choose a provider rather than on rate alone.

Engineering days are deliberately left in days rather than rupees — loaded cost varies too much to pretend otherwise. Multiply by your own number and the conclusion usually holds: below six figures of annual volume, arguing about ₹0.10 a call is arguing about the smaller half of the budget.

How to put this in a budget request

Three lines, in this order, because it is the order that survives questions:

  1. Verification spend = forecast annual volume × rate, with the volume derived from supplier count × refresh cadence rather than guessed.
  2. One-off integration = engineering days, stated as days.
  3. Avoided cost = hours of manual checking removed, plus a line on what a single missed cancelled GSTIN would have cost in blocked input tax credit — the mechanics of which are in the ITC rules.

At ₹0.50 per verification, 1,000 GSTINs cost ₹500. Buying a block of 2,500 credits or more drops the rate to ₹0.40, so the same 1,000 verifications cost ₹400 if they come out of a bulk purchase.
