GST Active Status Check: Is a GST Number Active or Not?

How to check if a GST number is Active, Suspended, Cancelled or Inactive, what each status means, why it matters before you pay a supplier, and how to check many GSTINs at once with an API.

Written and reviewed by the GSTIN API team Last reviewed

To check whether a GST number is active, search the GSTIN on the GST portal or a GST number search tool and read the status field. It will say Active, Suspended, Cancelled or Inactive. Only Active means the business can currently charge GST and you can safely rely on its invoices for input tax credit. This post explains what each status means, how to run a GST status check by hand, and how to check hundreds of suppliers automatically so a cancelled GSTIN never reaches your payment run.

What each GST status means

Every GSTIN has a single current status. These are the values you will see:

StatusWhat it meansWhat to do as a buyer
ActiveRegistration is valid and in force. The business can issue tax invoices and charge GST.Proceed, and confirm the legal name matches the invoice.
SuspendedRegistration is on hold, usually while a cancellation application or proceeding is pending. It can return to Active.Pause new orders and payments against fresh GST invoices until it resolves.
CancelledRegistration has been withdrawn, either at the taxpayer's request or by the department. The status shows the effective date.Do not accept GST invoices dated after the effective date. Review past ones.
InactiveShown on some records that are not in normal operation, for example registrations that never completed validation.Treat as not registered until the supplier shows you an Active GSTIN.

Suspended is the status people misread most often. It is covered in depth in GST suspended status meaning, and the cancellation side in GST cancellation and revocation.

How to check GST status on the portal

The official way to answer "how to check GST number is active or not" takes about a minute per GSTIN:

  1. Open gst.gov.in. You do not need to log in.
  2. Go to Search Taxpayer > Search by GSTIN/UIN.
  3. Enter the 15-character GSTIN and the captcha, then click Search.
  4. Read GSTIN/UIN Status. Also note the legal name, date of registration, taxpayer type and, for cancelled GSTINs, the date of cancellation.
  5. Optionally click Show Filing Table to see which returns the business has filed and when.

If the portal says no record was found, the GSTIN is probably mistyped or fake. See GST portal "no record found" and how to check a fake GST number.

Check without logging in or captcha

For an occasional check, our free GST number search returns the same live status, legal name, address and filing history without the captcha. It is handy on a phone when a supplier hands you a bill and you want to know right now whether the GST on it is real.

Why status matters before you pay a supplier

When you pay a supplier, you are paying the GST on the invoice too, and you expect to recover it as input tax credit. That credit depends on the supplier being registered and reporting the invoice. If the GSTIN is cancelled or suspended, several things can go wrong:

  • The invoice may never reach your GSTR-2B. A supplier that is not in normal operation is unlikely to file GSTR-1, so the credit will not show up for you to claim.
  • Credit can be denied. Tax charged by someone not registered to charge it is not eligible credit, and you will have paid it in cash for nothing.
  • Cancellation can be retrospective. The department can cancel a registration from an earlier date, which can pull back credit you already claimed. See what happens when a supplier's GST is cancelled retrospectively.
  • Fake invoice exposure. Many shell entities are cancelled after a short life. A purchase from one draws scrutiny on your own credit.

Active is not the whole story

An Active status is necessary but not sufficient. Before a large payment, look at three more things:

  • Legal and trade name. They should match the name on the invoice and your vendor master. A mismatch can mean the GSTIN belongs to someone else. See legal name vs trade name.
  • Return filing history. An Active supplier who has not filed GSTR-1 for months will not pass credit to you. See how to check a supplier's return filing status.
  • State and registration date. A GSTIN registered last week in a state the supplier has never mentioned is worth a phone call.

Checking status in bulk or automatically

The portal is fine for one GSTIN. It does not work for a vendor master of 500 suppliers, a marketplace onboarding sellers daily, or a payments team that wants every payee checked before a run. That is what the gstinapi.com GST verification API is for. One call returns, as JSON:

  • current status (Active, Suspended, Cancelled, Inactive) and cancellation date where relevant;
  • legal name, trade name, constitution of business and taxpayer type;
  • registration date, principal address and jurisdiction;
  • return filing history, so you can see whether GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B are up to date.
async function verifyGSTIN(gstin) {
  const response = await fetch(
    `https://gstinapi.com/api/get-taxpayer-info/${gstin}`,
    { headers: { 'x-api-key': 'YOUR_API_KEY' } }
  );

  return response.json();
}

const result = await verifyGSTIN('27AAACR5055K1Z7');
console.log(result.taxpayer_data.name, result.taxpayer_data.status);
function verifyGSTIN(string $gstin): array
{
    $curl = curl_init("https://gstinapi.com/api/get-taxpayer-info/{$gstin}");

    curl_setopt_array($curl, [
        CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER => true,
        CURLOPT_HTTPHEADER => ['x-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY'],
    ]);

    $response = curl_exec($curl);
    curl_close($curl);

    return json_decode($response, true);
}

$result = verifyGSTIN('27AAACR5055K1Z7');
echo $result['taxpayer_data']['name'];
import requests

def verify_gstin(gstin: str) -> dict:
    url = f"https://gstinapi.com/api/get-taxpayer-info/{gstin}"
    headers = {"x-api-key": "YOUR_API_KEY"}

    response = requests.get(url, headers=headers)
    response.raise_for_status()
    return response.json()

result = verify_gstin("27AAACR5055K1Z7")
print(result["taxpayer_data"]["name"], result["taxpayer_data"]["status"])

Three common ways teams use it:

  1. Bulk check a list. Upload a CSV of GSTINs and get back status and name for each. See the bulk GSTIN verification guide.
  2. Check before every payment run. Call the API for each payee in the batch and hold any payment where the status is not Active.
  3. Monitor daily. Re-check your active vendors on a schedule and get alerted the day one moves to Suspended or Cancelled. The setup is described in automated daily vendor GSTIN monitoring.

You pay per successful lookup, with no subscription. Prices and free credits are on the pricing page, and if you work in spreadsheets, the same check runs from Google Sheets or Excel.

Frequently asked questions

Go to gst.gov.in, open Search Taxpayer > Search by GSTIN/UIN, enter the 15-character GSTIN and the captcha, and read the GSTIN/UIN Status field. It shows Active, Suspended, Cancelled or Inactive. You can also use a free GST number search tool or, for many GSTINs, a GST verification API that returns the same status field from live government data.
Active means the registration is valid and in force on the date you check. The business can issue tax invoices and charge GST, and its buyers can claim input tax credit on those invoices, subject to the supplier reporting them and the other conditions for credit.
Suspended is a temporary hold, usually while a cancellation application or proceeding is pending; it can return to Active. Cancelled means the registration has been withdrawn, either on the taxpayer's request or by the department, and can only be restored through revocation. Inactive appears on some records that are not in normal operation; for transacting purposes, treat it like cancelled until you have confirmed otherwise.
Generally not on invoices issued after the effective date of cancellation, because the supplier is no longer registered to charge GST. Cancellation can also be made retrospective, which can affect credit you have already claimed. This is why buyers check status before payment and keep checking it afterwards.
Any day. Registrations are suspended and cancelled continuously, often for non-filing of returns. A status you checked at onboarding says nothing reliable about today, which is why recurring checks matter for active vendors.
The GST portal checks one GSTIN at a time behind a captcha. For lists, upload a CSV to a bulk verification tool or call a GST verification API from your ERP, spreadsheet or script. gstinapi.com returns status, legal name, registration dates and filing history in a single JSON response per GSTIN.
