How to Add GST Number in Flipkart and Amazon (Sellers and Buyers)
Step-by-step guide to adding your GSTIN on Flipkart Seller Hub and Amazon Seller Central, why a GSTIN gets rejected, and how buyers add GST details at checkout to get a B2B invoice and claim ITC.
"How to add GST number in Flipkart" is really two questions. A seller needs the GSTIN on their Seller Hub or Seller Central account so the marketplace can list their products, collect TCS and issue proper invoices. A buyer needs to enter their GSTIN at checkout so the invoice comes out as a B2B tax invoice and they can claim input tax credit. This guide covers both, on Flipkart and on Amazon.
Two different questions: sellers and buyers
For a seller, the GSTIN is a condition of doing business on the marketplace. Flipkart and Amazon are e-commerce operators under GST: they collect tax at source (TCS) on your sales and report them against your GSTIN. If you sell taxable goods, they will not let you go live without one, and the GSTIN you give decides which state's registration your sales are reported under.
For a buyer, the GSTIN is optional. Without it you get a normal retail (B2C) invoice. With it, the seller issues a B2B tax invoice in your business's name, reports it in GSTR-1, and the purchase appears in your GSTR-2B, which is what lets you claim credit.
Before you start: what you need
- your 15-character GSTIN and the legal name exactly as on the GST registration certificate;
- the principal or additional place of business on the registration that matches your pickup or warehouse address;
- a copy of the registration certificate, in case the marketplace asks for it;
- a check that the GSTIN is Active. A cancelled or suspended number will be rejected. Our guide to the GST active status check shows how.
If you do not yet have a GSTIN, see how to register for GST online. Most marketplaces let you start account setup while the application is pending, but you cannot sell taxable goods until the number is issued.
Adding GST number on Flipkart Seller Hub
New sellers give their GSTIN during registration, on the first screens of Seller Hub sign-up. To add or change it on an existing account, the route is usually:
- Log in to Flipkart Seller Hub.
- Open your profile or account menu and choose the business details or tax details section.
- Find the GSTIN field and enter or edit your 15-character number.
- Check that the business name, PAN and address shown match your GST registration. The PAN inside the GSTIN must match the PAN on the account.
- Upload the GST certificate if asked, and submit.
- Wait for verification. Flipkart checks the number against the GST system and may take some time to approve the change. You will usually be notified in Seller Hub or by email.
If you add a warehouse or pickup location in another state, Flipkart will ask for the GSTIN of that state. Under GST, each state you supply from needs its own registration; our guide to multiple GST registrations on one PAN explains why.
Adding GST number on Amazon Seller Central
On Amazon, the GSTIN sits in your tax settings. The usual route:
- Log in to Amazon Seller Central.
- Open Settings, then Account Info.
- Find the tax information or tax settings section.
- Enter your GSTIN, confirm the legal name and registered address, and save.
- If you ship from more than one state, add each GSTIN and link it to the matching pickup or warehouse address. Fulfilment centres in a new state need that state's GSTIN.
- Amazon validates the GSTIN. Once approved, it appears on invoices generated for your orders.
Some sellers are asked to choose whether they sell only GST-exempt products. Choose that only if every product you list is exempt; picking it to avoid giving a GSTIN while listing taxable goods will cause problems later, both with the marketplace and with GST.
Why a GSTIN gets rejected
Both marketplaces check the number before accepting it. The common reasons for rejection:
- The GSTIN is not Active. A cancelled or suspended registration will fail.
- Name mismatch. The business name on the account differs from the legal or trade name on the registration. See legal name vs trade name.
- PAN mismatch. The PAN in characters 3 to 12 of the GSTIN is different from the PAN on the seller account.
- State mismatch. The GSTIN is from one state and the pickup address is in another.
- Typing errors. A wrong character fails the check digit. Our GSTIN format guide shows how the number is built.
Look up your own GSTIN first and compare the result with your account details line by line. It is quicker than waiting for a rejection email.
Adding GST number as a buyer for a GST invoice
Businesses buying on Flipkart or Amazon can get a B2B invoice and claim input tax credit, as long as the GSTIN is added before the order is placed.
- Add the product to your cart and go to checkout.
- Look for an option such as "Use GST invoice" or "Add GST details". On Flipkart it usually appears on the order summary or address step; on Amazon it is usually on the address step or in your saved addresses.
- Enter your GSTIN and the business name exactly as registered.
- Tick the confirmation box and place the order.
- After delivery, download the invoice and check that it shows your GSTIN and the GST split.
A few points trip buyers up. The option is not available on every product or from every seller. The GSTIN cannot usually be added after the order is placed, because the invoice is generated at that point. And the place of supply follows the delivery address, so a GSTIN from one state with delivery in another may produce IGST where you expected CGST and SGST. Our guide to place of supply rules explains why. For regular purchasing, Amazon also runs a separate business buying account built around GST invoices.
After adding it: TCS, returns and invoices
Once your GSTIN is live, the marketplace collects TCS on your net taxable sales and reports it in its own return. The amount shows in your electronic cash ledger, where you can use it against your tax. Our guide to GST TDS and TCS explains the mechanics, and GST for e-commerce sellers covers returns, reconciliation and the marketplace's reports.
Reconcile the marketplace's TCS statement with your own sales each month, and make sure your GSTR-1 reports the same sales the marketplace reported. Mismatches lead to notices. If you are still deciding whether you need a GSTIN at all, read selling online without GST first.
Marketplaces themselves verify thousands of seller GSTINs during onboarding, and so do B2B platforms that issue invoices to business buyers. A GSTIN verification API does that check in one call: status, legal name and address, ready to compare with what the seller typed.
