Best GST Verification API for Startups in India

What a startup actually needs from a GST verification API — pay-per-use pricing, no lock-in, same-day integration — and how the Indian options compare.

Written and reviewed by the GSTIN API team Last reviewed

The best GST verification API for a startup is the one you can be live on this afternoon, that bills per call rather than per month, and that does not require a conversation with a salesperson before it returns its first JSON body. Almost everything else — response schema, uptime, data depth — is close enough between serious providers that it will not decide the outcome at your stage.

On gstinapi.com that shape is ₹0.50 per verification, ₹0.40 once a single purchase crosses 2,500 credits, 20 free credits on signup, and no subscription. But the more useful thing this page can give you is the reasoning: what to weigh, what the alternatives look like, and what your actual bill will be at the volumes a seed-stage company really runs.

What a startup needs that an enterprise does not

Enterprise procurement optimises for contractual certainty: an SLA, a security review, a named account manager, a fixed annual number the CFO can plan around. Those things cost money and, more importantly, weeks. At seed stage the constraints are entirely different, and buying an enterprise-shaped product against startup-shaped constraints is the usual mistake.

What actually decides the choice at each stage.

Read that table honestly against your own situation and the shortlist usually writes itself. A provider whose cheapest plan is a ₹2,000-a-month subscription is more expensive than one charging ₹0.50 a call until you are running 4,000 verifications a month — and if you are not there yet, the subscription is simply a tax on being early.

The options available to an Indian startup

Broadly there are four routes, and they are genuinely different products rather than four prices for the same thing.

  • A focused verification API. One endpoint, taxpayer data back as JSON, billed per call. This is what we build, and it is what most startups need: you are verifying counterparties, not filing returns on their behalf.
  • A full compliance suite. Return filing, reconciliation, e-invoicing and verification bundled together, usually from a GSP. Powerful and correspondingly priced; the right answer when compliance is your product, and overkill when you just need to know whether a GSTIN is real. The distinction is unpacked in return filing and reconciliation APIs.
  • A KYC/KYB platform. GSTIN verification as one check among PAN, bank account and director checks. Sensible if you need the whole bundle for lending or onboarding — see KYB verification in India — and expensive if GST is the only piece you use.
  • Build it yourself. Automating gst.gov.in. Covered below, and in more depth in GST API versus portal scraping.

A useful filter: if you cannot get an API key and make a successful call without speaking to anybody, the product is not built for your stage, whatever the pricing page says. A broader comparison of the Indian market is in choosing a GST verification API provider.

Pricing shapes, and which one survives a pivot

The per-call rate is the number everyone compares and the least important one at seed stage. What matters is the shape, because the shape determines what happens when your assumptions change — and at seed stage, they will.

  • Prepaid credits, no expiry pressure. Exposure capped at what you have already spent. If the feature gets cut next quarter, you stop calling and that is the end of it.
  • Monthly subscription. Fine once volume is steady and close to the allowance. Before that you are paying full price in months where you verified forty GSTINs.
  • Annual contract with a minimum. Genuinely cheaper per call, and a poor fit for a company whose product may not exist in its current form in twelve months.

Our model is prepaid credits precisely because it matches spiky, uncertain volume. The full arithmetic, including how to forecast a monthly bill, is in GST API pricing explained.

What it actually costs at seed stage

Founders routinely over-plan this line item. Here is the arithmetic at real early-stage volumes.

Startup shapeVerifications / monthMonthly cost
B2B SaaS, 100 new customers a month100₹50
Invoicing product, 500 businesses onboarded500₹250
Marketplace, 3,000 seller signups3,000≈₹1,200 at the ₹0.40 tier
Fintech, 1,000 applicants re-checked monthly2,000≈₹800 at the ₹0.40 tier
Monthly spend at GSTIN API rates, verifying each counterparty once at onboarding.

Put those numbers next to a single day of engineering time and the build-versus-buy question answers itself. The 20 free credits on signup are enough to build and test the whole integration before you spend anything at all.

Integrating it this afternoon

There is no SDK to install and no OAuth dance. One GET request with an x-api-key header:

curl -H "x-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY" \
  https://gstinapi.com/api/get-taxpayer-info/27AAACR5055K1Z7

The response carries legal name, trade name, status, registration date, constitution, principal place of business, e-invoicing eligibility and recent filing history. Full field reference is in the docs, and there are worked walkthroughs for the stacks most early teams are on: Node.js, Python, Laravel and Go.

One design note worth getting right on day one: do the verification asynchronously rather than inside the signup request. Validate format and checksum synchronously so the user gets instant feedback on a typo, then queue the API call and update the record when it returns. Your signup never depends on a third party being fast.

Five mistakes startups make with GST verification

  1. Spending a credit on an obviously invalid GSTIN. The 15-character format and its mod-36 checksum can be validated locally for free. Do that first — see GSTIN format explained.
  2. Treating "GSTIN exists" as "vendor is fine". A GSTIN can be real and cancelled. Read the status field and act on it, as covered in what suspended status means.
  3. Verifying once, forever. Registration status changes. A customer verified at signup in January is not verified in November. Decide a re-check cadence deliberately.
  4. Blocking the signup form on the API call. One slow upstream minute becomes your conversion problem. Queue it.
  5. Signing an annual contract to save 20 paise a call. At 500 calls a month that is ₹100 a month of savings bought with twelve months of commitment.

Frequently asked questions

For most startups the right choice is a pay-per-use GSTIN verification API with no subscription, no minimum commitment and no sales call between signup and first successful call. On gstinapi.com that is ₹0.50 per verification, ₹0.40 above 2,500 credits in a single purchase, with 20 free credits on signup. The deciding factor is rarely the per-call price — it is whether you can integrate today without a contract.
There are free credits and free tiers, but no sustainable unlimited free API, because every lookup costs the provider an upstream government-data request. We give 20 free credits on email confirmation and a free web tool with five lookups a day. Treat any offer of unlimited free verification as a signal to ask how it is funded.
Far less than founders expect. A B2B SaaS onboarding 100 new customers a month, verifying each once, spends ₹50 a month. Even a marketplace onboarding 3,000 sellers a month spends around ₹1,200. The cost only becomes material when you re-verify a large master frequently, which is a deliberate choice you control.
No. Automating the portal means session handling, captcha and HTML parsing that breaks without notice, and mandatory multi-factor authentication for all taxpayers since 1 April 2025 makes unattended automation impractical. The engineering time costs more in the first week than the API will cost in the first two years.
No. Reading public taxpayer registration data — legal name, status, address, registration date, filing history — does not require you to become a GST Suvidha Provider. A GSP licence is about filing returns and generating e-invoices on a taxpayer behalf, which is a different capability with a different compliance burden.
That is exactly why pay-as-you-go matters at this stage. With prepaid credits your exposure is limited to what you have already bought, and there is no notice period or annual minimum to unwind. Purchased credits do carry the expiry period shown at the time of purchase, so buy against forecast usage rather than buying the largest block available.
