E-Invoice Portal Login and Registration, Step by Step

Registering on the e-invoice portal, logging in with e-way bill credentials, checking whether your GSTIN is enabled, and fixing the common login errors.

E-invoices are not generated on the GST portal. They are registered on an Invoice Registration Portal (IRP), which has its own login, its own registration and its own errors. This guide covers the NIC portal most businesses start with: checking that your GSTIN is enabled, registering, logging in (often with the e-way bill credentials you already have), and the fixes for the login problems that come up most.

Which e-invoice portal to log in to

The government has authorised several Invoice Registration Portals. NIC runs the original one at einvoice1.gst.gov.in, and further IRPs, some operated by private providers, run at their own addresses. A taxpayer may use any of them, and an IRN from one is as valid as an IRN from another. Most businesses begin with NIC's, because it is linked to the e-way bill system and because their accounting software is already integrated with it. Everything below refers to the NIC portal unless stated.

If you are wondering why a separate portal exists at all, the e-way bill vs e-invoice guide explains how the two systems divide the work.

First, check your GSTIN is enabled

E-invoicing applies to businesses whose aggregate turnover in any financial year since 2017-18 has crossed the notified threshold — currently ₹5 crore. See who must e-invoice in 2026. The portal lets anyone check a GSTIN's status without logging in:

  1. Open einvoice1.gst.gov.in and find the e-Invoice status search under Search.
  2. Enter the GSTIN and the captcha.
  3. The result shows whether e-invoicing is enabled for that GSTIN.

If you are required to e-invoice but show as not enabled — for example because the turnover in an earlier year was not captured — the portal has a self-enablement option. Enable before you need to issue the first e-invoice, not on the day.

Registering on the e-invoice portal

If you already use the e-way bill system, skip this step and log in with those credentials. Otherwise:

  1. On the portal, go to Registration → e-Invoice Registration.
  2. Enter the GSTIN and the captcha. The portal fetches the business details from the GST system.
  3. An OTP goes to the mobile number registered on the GST portal for the authorised signatory. Enter it.
  4. Choose a username and password, and submit.

The mobile number and email come from your GST registration and cannot be edited on the IRP. Sub-users — for branches, or for an accounts team member — can be created after the main user logs in, each with their own username and limited permissions.

Logging in

Enter the username, password and captcha on the portal's login page. Larger taxpayers may be asked for a second factor, an OTP, as NIC has been extending two-factor authentication across its systems; the 2FA guide covers the options on the e-way bill side, which share the same approach. Keep the registered mobile with someone who is available during invoicing hours.

What you can do after logging in

  • Generate an IRN for a single invoice, by entering it on screen or uploading the JSON from the offline tool.
  • Bulk upload invoices using the bulk generation tool.
  • Cancel an IRN within 24 hours of generation. See how to cancel an e-invoice.
  • Search and print e-invoices already generated.
  • Generate an e-way bill from an IRN, where Part B details are available.
  • Register for API access, directly or through a GSP.
  • Verify a signed invoice or QR code. See e-invoice QR code verification.

ProblemUsual cause and fix
"GSTIN is not enabled for e-invoicing"Check status and use self-enablement if you are required to e-invoice.
OTP goes to an old mobile numberUpdate the authorised signatory's mobile on gst.gov.in through a non-core amendment. The IRP reads it from there.
"Already registered" during registrationYou have e-way bill credentials. Log in with those, or use Forgot Username.
Account lockedToo many wrong passwords. Wait for the lock to lapse or reset the password with the OTP.
GSTIN shows as cancelled or suspendedAn inactive registration cannot generate IRNs. Resolve the registration first. See suspended status.

Moving from the portal to the API

Businesses issuing more than a handful of invoices a day usually move from the portal to generating IRNs directly from their billing system through the e-invoice API, either on their own or through a GSP. The path — sandbox, production credentials, IP whitelisting — is in the e-invoice API developer portal guide, and the software side in integrating e-invoicing into billing software.

Frequently asked questions

The NIC Invoice Registration Portal is at einvoice1.gst.gov.in. It is separate from the main GST portal at gst.gov.in and has its own username and password. Other authorised Invoice Registration Portals run at their own addresses, and a taxpayer can use any of them.
Yes, on the NIC portal. A taxpayer already registered on the e-way bill system at ewaybillgst.gov.in can log in to the NIC e-invoice portal with the same username and password, without registering again.
On einvoice1.gst.gov.in choose Registration, then e-Invoice Registration, enter your GSTIN and the captcha, and verify the OTP sent to the mobile number registered on the GST portal. Then create a username and password. The mobile number and email are taken from your GST registration and cannot be changed on the e-invoice portal itself.
Use the e-invoice status search on the e-invoice portal, which is available without logging in: enter the GSTIN and it shows whether e-invoicing is enabled for it. Businesses whose turnover has crossed the threshold but which are not enabled can use the self-enablement option on the portal.
The e-invoice portal sends the OTP to the mobile number registered for the authorised signatory on the GST portal. If that number has changed, update it on gst.gov.in through a non-core amendment first; the e-invoice portal picks up the updated details from the GST system.
